Dr Sam Rice

NHS Wales is very fortunate to have many dedicated and enthusiastic healthcare professionals who have championed and progressed diabetes service development. It is a pleasure to have this new award to recognise and celebrate this dedication and outstanding achievement.

Sam is a consultant physician and endocrinologist at Hywel Dda University Health Board and Honorary Senior Lecturer Swansea Clinical School.

He has been a consultant for six years and a National Institute of Clinical and Health Care Research Clinical Fellow from 2012 to 2015. During this time he has developed a research and innovations portfolio focused predominantly on patient support and education. As part of the clinical champion position he will look to develop this work further and propagate successful programmes. Projects are underway to evaluate the effectiveness of text-messaging patient support, the impact of prescribed film content on self-management skills, and the ability of expert patients to deliver courses for those newly diagnosed.
