Dr Lalantha Leelarathna

This award recognises an individual  for their sterling work to improve diabetes care.
NHS England are always grateful for the efforts the whole diabetes community put forward to improve care and this award recognises one individual for their efforts during this year

Lalantha qualified from University of Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1998. He has worked as senior house officer Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (2002 to 2005); specialist registrar diabetes, endocrinology and general internal medicine, London Deanery including Guys and St Thomas’ hospitals (2005 to 2010) and has a Masters in Diabetes and Endocrinology from Kings College, London. PhD thesis “Improving Glucose Control and Reducing the Burden of Hypoglycaemia: Use of Novel Diabetes Technology in Type 1 Diabetes and Critical Illness”, University Of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK; awarded 2014.

He is currently consultant Diabetologist at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

His special interests include insulin pump therapy, continuous glucose monitoring, closed-loop insulin delivery, transition and Type 1 Diabetes.

He is internationally recognised for research in diabetes technology with 60+ publications in leading diabetes journals. Key research areas: Type 1 diabetes, Insulin pump therapy, closed-loop (Artificial Pancreas) and continuous glucose monitoring.
