”Equality and equity are two different things” Implementation and Evaluation of a Hybrid Educational Model for Automated Insulin Delivery Systems at Birmingham Children’s Hospital
by Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Foundation Trust

Executive Summary
Responding to the challenge of equitable onboarding of children and young people (CYP) with type 1 diabetes onto Automated Insulin Delivery systems, our team at Birmingham Children’s Hospital innovated a hybrid model of diabetes education. This approach blended digital and face-to-face flipped learning, improving glucose management and equitable access across diverse patient demographics. Our published results, presented internationally, validate the efficacy of this model, demonstrating equal glucose control across ethnic groups, socioeconomic strata, and school-age groups (NHS Core20PLUS5 demographic). We developed a training package based on the model that has been used to educate across the CYP Networks and internationally.
