“Confidence in Dermatology”
by GP Federations
GP Federations’ ‘Confidence in Dermatology’ is a series of educational tools, including webinars and treatment guidelines, developed by GPs with enhanced skills in Dermatology, with input from secondary care. Eleven webinars have been produced, and treatment guidelines embedded in GP systems in NI. The aim is to provide an educational resource for primary care practitioners, improving their confidence and knowledge in managing the most common dermatological conditions. This means a greater number of patients can be managed in a primary care setting, improving patient experience, increasing the knowledge of GPs, and enhancing the quality of referrals to secondary care.
Judges’ comments:
“”Confidence in Dermatology” was very clear and well written, with robust clear methodology. It had good safety considerations and accessibility. It showed strong development of relationships between primary and secondary care in Ireland. The goals and aims were well thought through and achievable.”

Skin of Colour Training Day
by Skin of Colour Training Day UK
The Skin of Colour Training Day (SOCTD) UK is now in its second year. It was launched in 2021 to provide excellence in dermatology education in SOC. Observational studies have shown a lack of confidence among dermatology consultants and trainees in managing SOC presentations. Hence, the course aims to fill this vital gap to improve patient care in SOC populations. National and international experts deliver this high quality annual teaching programme. The educational content complements the 2021 UK Dermatology Training Curriculum syllabus and is open to all healthcare professionals in the dermatology community.
Judges’ comments:
“This topical and much-needed project was impressive. The virtual format made it accessible and awareness of skin of colour is becoming more widespread in the UK, so good to see understanding being raised in other countries. It had a clear plan and objectives and the training was (and is) clearly valuable.”

A Pre-referral Care Pathway for the Management of Paediatric Atopic Eczema in Primary Care
by Aneurin Bevan Health Board
Referrals into secondary care for children with atopic eczema are increasing significantly. It has been identified that most children do not require specialist input and could be managed in primary care with basic eczema management. Aneurin Bevan Health Board’s care pathway has been developed to provide guidance to primary care practitioners in relation to appropriate prescribing of topical treatments, particularly in relation to adequate quantities of topical steroids. The aim is to provide baseline management to ensure that referrals received do require specialist intervention and, as a result, reduce waiting times for those requiring such care.
Judges’ comments:
“This work from Aneurin Bevan Health Board is very focused, set the scene and had good measurement. Steroid phobia is a huge problem in the management of childhood eczema and the simple accessible info sheet is impressive. It was a good, simple, educational intervention, carried out well. The judges look forward to seeing this one develop.”
